Purity: A Poem and a Message.

Waiting for true love to come
Hoping that she will find the one
But while she waits for that time to be
She will remain pure for all to see
For her Lord and Savior would want it that way
She will not in the least bit stray
Until she makes her vow one day
To love, cherish, and obey.

That poem I wrote just yesterday. It talks about something very important. It talks about purity.

What does the Bible say about purity and remaining pure? I think the Bible has quite a bit to say about it.

"Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart." 2 Timothy 2:22

"For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God;" 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5

"Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food but God will do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body." I Corinthians 6:13

"Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life. Put away from you a deceitful mouth And put devious speech far from you. Let your eyes look directly ahead And let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you. Watch the path of your feet And all your ways will be established. Do not turn to the right nor to the left; Turn your foot from evil." Proverbs 4:23-27

"How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word." Psalm 119:9

The bible speaks about purity and remaining pure. These are only a few verses in regards to this subject. Now that I have written down some Bible verses that talk about purity I will tell you what my thoughts are on the subject.

Well here it goes...

I believe that people should remain pure for their future spouses. Lots of people have their own version of what purity looks like. A lot of people in general think that it is okay to do things as long as it isn't actually sex. I know I said that word and I don't like to hear people say that word either but I don't know what other word to use. As I was saying they think it is okay to be flirtatious and to kiss each other. I don't believe this is staying pure. In my opinion I think that you shouldn't kiss anyone until the day you are married. Not until you say I do on your wedding day. I would even go so far as to say that even if you are engaged you shouldn't kiss your fiancee. This is only my opinion and I can hazard to guess that some will disagree with me. But this is what I plan on doing in my vow to remain pure. My first kiss will be given to my husband at the altar and not before then.

Sometimes people can be stubborn and think that their view is the right way. They think that they are going the right way and doing the right thing. They know what they are doing or so they think? But our mind can become very clouded in what we want to believe and want to happen and not what God has planned for our life. We need to fully lean on Him and surrender everything to Him. Not part of our lives but all of it. Only then can He clear our vision and show us that what we really need to do is focus on Him right now and what he has laid right in front of us.

I'm not saying this to admonish you but rather to ask you to take a look at your life for a second and see if you are walking in a manner that is right before the Lord with your purity and remaining pure as all believers should.

I needed to look at this myself. I learned in the process of writing this post. I know that I'm imperfect too. I struggle with being stubborn and thinking my way is the right way when it comes to things. I struggle sometimes with focusing on what the Lord has for me right now. Sometimes my thoughts drift to the future which isn't always necessarily a bad thing. The part that hit me the hardest was that I was not giving everything to Him in my life. I was not fully relying on God and trusting in Him to take care of it all. Though I struggle with this part I don't want to. I want to give it all to Him and just let Him lead me through it all. I don't want to be in control. I want Christ to be fully in control of my life for both now and forevermore.

Hi Michelle,
I just wanted to chime in and let you know you aren't the only girl out there that thinks this way about purity. =D I just wrote up a note for someone on what I think courtship should look like and alot of what I had to say flows with your post as well. Even the part about saving the first kiss. =D I really like the verses you quoted too.
It's important that anyone who has an opinion or conviction can back it up with Biblical principles. Christians may disagree about something, but as long as they can make a good valid case from scripture to support their view then I can respect that. All that to say that I think we have a solid biblical backing to make a Biblical case about physical purity before marriage and those who advocate kissing before marriage need to mold their thinking with Biblical principles as well and see if what they advocate actually flows with Scripture. Because ultimately the goal isn't to win an argument, but to conform out thinking and our lives to be obedient to Scripture for the glory of God.
I'm in the same boat too, seeking to trust God with my life and continuing to let Him hold my future. So persevere and keep up the good work! He is a faithful God.

Michelle, I think what your saying is right on. I agree with you whole heartedly. I think for me, purity has always been a struggle. Mainly before I was a believer, but it can be a struggle. It is always nice to know what the bible has to say about purity because it is something that is often overlooked and underplayed as not a big deal. When in reality God sees it as a huge deal. I am so glad you wrote this blog because it helps to remind not just me but everyone that purity until married is biblical. And it is important. I think it is such an awesome thing to think about how special your wedding day will be knowing that your relationship was pure. Keep proclaiming the truth!!! you go girl!!!

I think it is very important to remain pure for marriage, and agree with most points on here. I'm just curious though - have you ever actually been in a serious relationship? It's one thing to speak from experience and give tips on how to remain pure. It's quite another to be so completely dogmatic with little experience, kind of like a high school biology student telling a doctor how to do his job. The student may be right and have completely valid points, but until he has the experience to go with the knowledge it is worth nothing in the eyes of the doctor.

Hi Michelle,
I love the poem that you wrote. I am working with the Church of God International Offices in Cleveland, Tennessee and we are writing a new curriculum for one of our Girls Clubs for girls grade 4-6. I am writing a lesson and have included/attached the following from your Michelle's Walk to Remember February 2009 blogspot.

Waiting for true love to come
Hoping that she will find the one
But while she waits for that time to be
She will remain pure for all to see
For her Lord and Savior would want it that way
She will not in the least bit stray
Until she makes her vow one day
To love, cherish, and obey.

I understand your materials are protected by copyright laws and we wish to comply. I am asking for permission to use these materials along with our lesson. We do intend to sell the curriculum.

If you have any questions, please contact me. I can be contacted by email at kami@mscog.org.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from your soon.
